The Reincarnated Assassin is a Genius Swordsman 870
Chapter 870
"Spoils? There are spoils besides... Ah!"
Sterin tilted his head as if wondering what Raon meant, then widened his eyes.
“Y-You’re not thinking of going to Matirus’s nest, are you?”
“I’m not just thinking about it—I’ve already decided to go.”
“It’s only natural to claim treasures that belong to no one.”
Just as crows are known to collect shiny objects, dragons are said to hoard gold ingots and jewels.
In old tales recorded in ancient books, during the era when the demonic dragon ruled the continent, humans and monsters alike offered jewels and gold coins to dragons. If it’s an ancient dragon as powerful as Matirus, it wouldn’t be surprising if he had amassed a mountain of gold and jewels.
“Ahem, as you say, there might be treasure.” Sterin cleared his throat and nodded.
“However, since I’m an elf, I’m not sure if it’s worth gathering all that.”
“Of course you’d say that, Protector,” Raon said with a smile.
If anyone else had made such a remark, they would’ve been called a hypocrite, but Sterin was an exception.
Despite being in the most noble and highest position among elves, he lived a life of remarkable simplicity.
“However, humans need money. Besides, don’t you think it’ll be fun?”
“Fun?” Sterin tilted his head again in confusion.
“Wouldn’t it be amusing to craft weapons to kill other dragons using the gold and bones of the dragon that attacked us? Aren’t you curious about their reaction?”
Raon shrugged with a grin.
“Even if we have dragon bones and teeth, processing them into equipment requires astronomical amounts of money. Raiding a dragon’s nest will be a big help in the upcoming war.”
“Using dragon bones and the money of dragons to create weapons to kill dragons…”
Sterin stroked his chin, his lips curling into a deep smile.
“That’s an excellent idea. I’d love to see the twisted expressions on their faces.”
He nodded, saying he would keep himself in shape so he could join the fight.
“Yes, you’ll definitely get to see it. We’ll raid other dragon nests too and send equipment to Seipia,” Raon said calmly, nodding.
“Other dragon nests?” Sterin’s eyes widened.
“Are you planning to raid all three of their nests?”
“Of course. Let’s leave the Red Dragon aside for now since we don’t know its name, but the Black Dragon is an ancient one. Its nest’s location is probably known,” Raon explained.
Judging by the Black Dragon’s hatred-filled demeanor toward humans and the fact that it's an ancient dragon, the location of its nest must be known.
Even if the Light Wind—no, even if another division or squad had to go, collecting that loot was the right move.
"That's right! It's only natural for the victor to take the spoils!"
Martha shouted enthusiastically and stamped her foot.
“Do they have ice cream too?”
Runaan smacked her lips, seemingly uninterested in money.
"They don't have that..."
Krein shook his head firmly in disbelief.
“Raiding nests, huh…? Is that what a Zieghart swordsman should do? Or is it mere thievery? Then again…if it saves a lot of people, it’s the right thing to do….”
Burren stroked his chin, furrowing his brows deeply in thought, resembling Karoon for a moment.
“At the very least, we have to go to Matirus’ nest. But I should report it to the family first.” Raon glanced up at the sky with a sigh. After the grueling battle, his family’s faces came to mind.
“I already sent the report,” Burren said with a light shake of his head.
“You sent the report?” Raon asked.
“Yes. I figured the head of house would be worried, so once I confirmed you were awake, I sent it right away.”
"...Okay. Thank you for your hard work."
Raon said with a faint smile. It felt strange because Rimmer, as the vice division leader, had always avoided making such reports, which often led to arguments between them. Hearing that Burren had sent one himself felt equally strange.
‘I do need to appoint a new vice leader soon..’
He had been thinking about the vice leader position after sending Rimmer off.
If strength alone were the criteria, Runaan was the strongest, but she wasn’t the type to take the lead.
Martha had great initiative and drive, but her quick temper made her unsuitable for commanding everyone.
No matter how he thought about it, the only one capable of leading the Light Wind division in his stead was Burren.
“Uwooooh!”
Dorian, who had been busy grilling dragon meat, suddenly set it aside and began drooling.
“Nest! Gold! Jewels! Supplies!”
His eyes shone golden, as though he were already inside Matirus’ nest.
Wh-What are you doing?! The meat is going to burn!
Wrath, on the other hand, seemed completely uninterested in the idea of gold and dragon nests and urged Dorian to flip the meat quickly.
“Ah!”
Dorian snapped back to his senses as if hearing Wrath’s voice and quickly flipped the meat over.
"Hmm, this looks almost done?"
Krein placed a slice of the Red Dragon’s meat—now free of its red energy—onto a plate.
“S-So, since you said you wanted it, division leader, please go ahead and have a taste?”
Krein pushed the steaming red dragon roast toward Raon, as if suggesting it was only fair for him to go first.
“That’s right. However…”
Raon gave a mischievous smile, skewered the meat with a fork, and pushed it into Krein’s mouth.
“In the Light Wind, Krein always goes first, doesn’t he?”
“Mmgh!”
Krein wanted to refuse, but he couldn’t overcome Raon’s superhuman strength. The meat ended up shoved straight into his mouth.
“Chew it.”
“Grr… Huh?”
Though Krein initially chewed with a scowl as if he hated it, his eyes suddenly widened.
“What the… Why is this so good and delicious?!”
Krein quickly swallowed the meat and smacked his lips.
"Really? You say it's delicious?"
Martha scoffed in disbelief.
“If you’re lying…”
“I’m not! It has an amazing smoky flavor! I’ve never had anything like this!”
Krein offered the dragon meat to Martha, telling her to try it herself.
“Me first.”
Runaan stepped forward confidently and took the first bite of the roast dragon meat.
“Tasty.”
Even though it wasn’t ice cream, she gave a thumbs up, expressing her exaggerated delight about the taste in her own unique way.
“Hmm…”
Martha narrowed her eyes, not wanting to lose to Runaan, stuffed a piece of dragon meat into her mouth.
“Wow, this… this smoky flavor is incredible! It’s different from beef!”
She kept eating, commenting on how delicious it was as she went for piece after piece.
“It’s true.”
“It really is delicious!”
“I never thought dragon meat would taste this good…”
The other Light Wind swordsmen also praised the flavor as they chewed and swallowed the red and gold dragon meat.
Keuh, watching them eat so well makes me feel great!
Wrath smiled broadly, happy to see everyone enjoying the dragon meat.
‘But they’re avoiding that one.’
Raon narrowed his eyes, looking at the Black Dragon meat piled up on the right. No one dared to touch the Black Dragon meat, fearing they might get poisoned.
Fools. Black lizards have strong resistance to poison, they don’t carry poison in their bodies!
Wrath shook his head, saying that even the small amount of poison that might have been there would have been burned away during cooking.
If no one else will eat it, then you should! The King of Essence can’t hold back any longer!
He waved his hands furiously, urging Raon to eat the meat quickly.
‘Fine, I get it.’
Raon nodded and took a piece of the untouched black dragon meat, putting it in his mouth.
First, salty salt wets the tongue, and over it, a wave of meat juice rushes in.
It felt like the sticky breath of meat juice spreading throughout the entire mouth.
Kiyaaaaa!
Wrath clenched his fists and let out a cry of delight.
This! This is why you eat dragon meat!
He shouted that it tasted even better than he had expected and started dancing in the air.
“A-Are you okay?”
Dorian asked, wondering if there really wasn’t any poison.
“I’m fine. It seems all the poison burned away.”
Only after Raon smiled and nodded did the other swordsmen begin to try the Black Dragon meat as well.
“Sir Handsome Raon leads everyone without fear when it comes to food as well…”
Siyan, who had been hiding behind a tree, muttered to herself as she scribbled in a notebook again. Raon felt a headache creeping in at the mention of “Sir Handsome Raon.”
“That book is scarier than any dragon…”
Raon shook his head as he ate another bite of the whole roasted black dragon meat.
[The trait <Gluttony> is activated.]
[Proficiency of <Poison Resistance> has increased.]
[The rank of the trait <Poison Resistance> increases.]
A reward message suddenly appeared.
Huh?
‘Hmm?’
Raon and Wrath both widened their eyes in surprise at the same time.
Wh-what is this? Why is your trait increasing?
Wrath opened his mouth wide in disbelief.
'Ah, it was strange that there was no poison trait in the rewards, so it's increasing like this.'
Raon chuckled as he read the messages. It seemed that the trait of Gluttony had activated, allowing him to absorb the black dragon’s trait of strong poison resistance.
‘Then…’
He put down the Black Dragon meat and also tried the Red Dragon meat.
Keuh! As expected, the Red Dragon is the best with its smoky flavor! It’s like the meat itself has fire sealed inside!
As if his earlier anger had never happened, Wrath was now happily puffing up his chubby cheeks.
[The trait <Gluttony> is activated.]
[The proficiency of the trait <Fire Resistance> increases.]
Once again, the system popped up. Although the rank didn’t increase, the proficiency of his Fire Resistance had increased.
Huh!
Wrath had been happily chomping when he suddenly froze.
I-It wasn't just the Black Dragon?
He trembled in disbelief, his jaw dropping.
It wasn't like this with the blue lizard before!
'That's because I didn't have Gluttony back then.'
Keuhhhh!
Wrath clutched his head as if struggling to comprehend what was happening.
'I wonder what would happen if I ate the Golden Dragon?'
W-Wait a minute!
Ignoring Wrath’s protest, Raon grinned and took a bite of the golden dragon meat.
I-It's delicious! The meat is so tender it practically melts on your tongue like ice cream!
Wrath, as if enchanted by the dragon meat, calmed his anger once again and softened his gaze.
[The trait <Gluttony> is activated.]
[The trait <Light Resistance> is created.]
[The proficiency of the trait <Light Resistance> increases.]
As expected, eating the Golden Dragon meat created a light resistance trait.
‘So this is how it works…?’
Raon’s lips curved into a wide smile.
It seemed he could increase all three resistances with tonight’s dinner.
‘I’ll just have to eat it all…’
D-don’t eat it!
Wrath stood in front of him, trying to stop him.
‘Really?’
Raon crossed his arms and looked as though he didn’t mind either way.
Uhh…
Wrath turned back to look at the steaming meat, his eyes trembling.
‘I don’t mind. Are you really okay with that?’
Keuhhh!
Wrath drooled as his head hung low.
‘So you’re really okay with not eating any more?’
Raon teased with a smirk.
J-Just one…
Wrath raised a finger, insisting on just one more bite.
‘Alright.’
Raon nodded and took another bite of the black dragon meat.
Keuhhh! It’s too delicious! Maybe it’s because he can’t have it all the time, it tastes even better…
Wrath, despite his delighted expression, gave a bland and emotionless description of the taste.
[The trait <Gluttony> is activated.]
[The proficiency of the trait <Poison Resistance> increases.]
Kuaaaak!
Wrath screamed in frustration as the message appeared again.
S-stop eating it!
Wrath shook his head, pleading for Raon to stop.
‘Alright.’
Raon set the meat down without hesitation.
‘Guess it’s time to head back.’
He already felt like he’d received enough rewards, so it didn’t matter to him whether or not he ate more.
W-Wait!
Wrath waved his hands frantically.
J-Just one more…
‘Alright.’
No, don’t eat it!
‘Alright.’
Actually, eat it! Or—no, don’t!
Wrath’s eyes filled with frustrated tears, and drool from his insatiable appetite dripped from his mouth as he grabbed his head in exasperation.
‘What do you even want me to do…?’
System! You angelic bastard!
* * *
The entrance to a small cave, just large enough for one or two people to squeeze through.
“Hmmm…”
An old goblin named Bobor let out a thin groan in front of the cave’s entrance.
“Why hasn’t he returned?”
Matirus had left saying he would destroy Seipia and then return, but two days had passed with no sign of him. The distant great forest was only slightly scorched, far from completely obliterated.
“What on earth happened…?”
Bobor furrowed his brows, pacing nervously in front of the cave, when a voice came from nearby.
“Is this the place?”
“Yes, it is.”
A voice tinged with anticipation drifted over, and suddenly there stood a black-haired woman and an elf.
“H-humans?”
Bobor recoiled in shock. It had been centuries since a human last entered the area known as Matirus’ nest.
“A talking goblin—this is my first time seeing one.”
The black-haired woman smirked at Bobor.
"What brings your lowly feet to this place! This is the nest of lord Matirus, the master of the mountains..."
"Oh. I know that."
The woman smiled nonchalantly and drew her sword.
“Y-you know, and you came here? If you draw your sword here, you’ll incur lord Matirus’ wrath!”
Bobor shook his head from side to side. Martirus was gone, and most of the guardians had gone with him, but he had no choice but to bluff now.
“How’s a dead lizard supposed to get angry?”
The black-haired woman shrugged, her smirk widening.
“D-dead? Lord Matirus is dead?”
The old goblin’s jaw trembled.
“Yes. And he was delicious.”
The woman with black hair smacked her lips, saying she had come to like dragon meat.
"D-Don't lie! There's no way he could be killed by a human..."
“Enough. Why don’t you join your master?”
She raised her sword, promising to end him painlessly.
‘I—I can’t avoid this...’
The reason Bobor had been placed in charge of guarding the nest was because he could speak several languages and was quite intelligent. He couldn’t even handle the weakest of the guardians in a fight, so there was no way for him to block that shining sword.
“Ahh…”
“Stop.”
Just as Bobor braced himself for death and lowered his eyes, a calm voice rang out from the hill below.
In his fear, he looked up and saw a blond-haired, red-eyed human approaching.
“It’d be nice to have someone show us around.”
“Ah…”
Bobor trembled, he could sense the energy radiating from this human, the energy that was on par with Matirus himself.
“You can do that for us, right?”
The human with blond hair and red eyes drew a chilling smile, as if asking for a favor.
“Y-yes…”
Bobor could only nod.
* * *
Unlike its narrow entrance, Matirus’ nest was huge, as if it had been made by tunneling through the mountain itself. Its scale alone was greater than Seipia.
But inside, there was nothing—no treasures, no valuables, nothing but an empty cave.
“What the hell! There’s nothing here!”
Martha frowned, annoyed at the vast but empty nest.
“No ice cream…”
Runaan shook her head, disappointed.
“I told you there wouldn’t be any!”
Krein sighed, clutching his chest in exasperation.
“Hmm, maybe he was frugal?”
Burren stroked his chin, as though he had expected something like this.
“Y-yes, that’s correct…”
The old goblin, who introduced himself as Bobor, nodded.
“Lord Matirus focused only on sleeping. Unlike other dragons, he had no interest in gathering mortal treasures and wealth.”
He shook his head, saying Matirus was different from other dragons and didn’t hoard human treasures and wealth.
"I see?"
Raon narrowed his eyes as he looked at Bobor.
'Something feels a little off.'
It looked like he was putting on an act, but with Bobor’s goblin face instead of a human’s, it was hard to read his expression. On top of that, torturing him wasn’t really an option—he was just a regular goblin and seemed like he’d die far too easily.
‘Then again, he could be telling the truth.’
Raon spread his aura perception throughout the nest, but he couldn’t detect any hidden spaces.
Didn’t the King of Essence say we should’ve just stayed and roasted more meat?
Wrath scowled, suggesting they go back and eat more meat.
‘You’re sure I can eat more?’
Ugh ….
He trembled slightly, recalling the rewards triggered by eating dragon meat.
D-don’t eat! No, eat it! Argh….
Wrath wrestled with himself like someone playing rock-paper-scissors in front of a mirror, eventually collapsing to the ground.
‘Should I just look for another lair, then?’
While he was wondering if he should go find the Black Dragon's or Red Dragon's nest, Dorian lowered his head and began sniffing the ground.
“I smell it! The scent of supplies!”
Dorian, half-squinting, pulled out a pickaxe and started striking the ground of the nest.
“What are you doing?”
Martha frowned as she watched Dorian.
“It’s here! I’m sure of it!”
When the pickaxe didn’t break through, Dorian tossed it aside and drew his sword, imbuing it with astral energy before slamming it down.
Kwaaaaang!
The entire cave shook under his full strength, and a deep crack opened in the ground.
A faint golden light flickered in the dark cave. Beneath the broken ground, gold ingots were laid out like carpet.
“……”
“……”
Raon and Bobor locked eyes.
“U-Um, that…that’s…”
“So that’s where it was.”
With a casual smile, Raon lightly stomped his foot.
BOOM!
The thick ground split wide open, and a dazzling golden radiance flooded the nest.
